What the table cannot tell you
A tick means we publish something for that nation. It does not mean the publisher’s own data is complete, and in several cases it is not. These are the limits worth knowing before you rely on a blank cell — or on a full one.
Ownership boundaries do not cover all of Scotland
Registers of Scotland held 59.8% of Scotland’s land mass on the Land Register at the end of February 2026, and flatted property is excluded from the published parcels entirely. A parcel missing from the map does not mean the land is unowned.
Ownership boundaries are freehold only in England and Wales
HM Land Registry’s INSPIRE index polygons carry registered freehold extents. Leasehold titles — most flats and many commercial interests — are not included, and the extent of a registered title cannot be established from them.
Planning applications are England only, and incomplete there
We publish what planning.data.gov.uk collects. Local planning authorities are not currently required to supply application data to that specification, so coverage varies by authority. Scotland and Wales are not covered.
Local plan allocations and policies maps are not published anywhere nationally
Site allocations, settlement boundaries and policies-map designations have no national dataset. On planning.data.gov.uk the allocation and policy datasets exist as schemas with no entities in them. Wales publishes one settlement boundary; Scotland’s national local development plan layer is restricted.
The same protection has different names in each nation
A listed building is Grade I, II* or II in England and Wales and Category A, B or C in Scotland. National Landscapes were called Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty until 2023. Scotland has National Scenic Areas instead. The legend names each nation’s own terms.
